Drugs and driving

Drug drivers think it's acceptable to take drugs more than drinking behind the wheel, according to a Government survey.

Monday 2nd March 2015,  saw the introduction of the Drug driving law, making it illegal to drive if you're impaired by drugs and the big thing is this includes prescription drugs.

The police have a right to stop and ask you to do a 'field impairment assessment' which is a series of tests.  If they think you're unfit to drive, they'll arrest you and take a blood and urine sample at a police station. Just one smoke of cannabis puts you over the limit. Other drugs include heroin, ecstasy, MDMA, LSD, cocaine, methylamphetamine and ketamine.

If you're convicted of drug driving you could receive:

  • 12 month driving ban (minimum)
  • criminal record
  • fine up to £5,000 or up to 6 months in prison or both

Prescription drugs

The drug driving law now includes the following prescription drugs.  Always read the label / instructions and check with your GP/ Doctor for advice.

The Gov.co.uk website suggests you keep some evidence of your prescription drug in the car or on you, should you be stopped by the Police.

amphetamine
is prescribed for conditions like ADHD and narcolepsy
clonazepam
is prescribed to treat seizures or panic disorders
diazepam
is used for anxiety disorders, alcohol withdrawal symptoms or muscle spasms
flunitrazepam
(also known as Rohypnol) is a sedative originally used in hospitals for deep sedation in the 1970s
lorazepam
is used to treat convulsions or seizures caused by epilepsy
methadone
is used in the treatment of heroin addiction and for pain relief
morphine
or opiates treat moderate to severe pain
oxazepam
is used to relieve anxiety, including anxiety caused by alcohol withdrawal
temazepam
affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause insomnia problems

These are the drugs on the list so far but others may well be added.  If in doubt don't drive and speak to your GP for more guidance.
