Counterpart Driving Licence abolished

Say goodbye to the counterpart driving licence.

On 8th June 2015, the paper counter part of your driving licence will no longer be valid.

The counterpart driving licence holds your driving number, provisional entitlement, endorsements and entitlement history. It can be used to change your address or sent off to DVLA for adding penalty points. DVLA will now hold all this information electronically on their databases.

When did you take your driving test?

When you took your driving test, depends on the codes or categories that appear on your photocard or paper driving licence. Some of these will appear on your photocard. If you're not sure about the categories, click here for more information:

Your driving licence also shows a sequence of numbers eg 115 means an organ donor and 45 means motorcycles with sidecars only. The codes printed on your driving licence tell you what conditions you must meet to drive. Click here for details on codes

What happens next?

The paper counter part can be destroyed after 8th June, as long as you have a photocard driving licence.
If you have a paper driving licence, this will still be valid. Only when it's time for a renewal, will you be issued with a photocard.

If you receive any penalty points, you will still need to pay the fine and send off your driving licence to DVLA, but instead of adding this information to your paper counter part, it will be stored electronically.

The photocard driving licence won't show any penalty points or all driving categories.

DVLA want you to check your driving licence, penalty points and categories on line. You will need your driving licence number, National Insurance number and your postcode to gain access to your records. You will be able to print out a summary of your licence should you wish to hire a car or drive for a living. If you need to share this information with a  hire company or employer, they will be given a one time access code to look at your record along with the last 4 digits of your driving licence. Which will now last for 21 days. This will also work for old style paper driving licences. You can still check this by post or over the phone. Here's the link to gain the access code:

If you are a business that needs access to driving licences please contact DVLA for a communications toolkit by email:
