Government defer MOT for 6 months

Have you heard the news this morning, the Government have granted 6 month exemption for cars that are due an MOT after 30th March 2020. There are still a few garages open as of today. How long they will open for depends on how long they can get parts delivered. Most of the main manufacturing plants have closed down around the world.

Car Dealer Magazine has spoken to DfT and they have clarified the following information:

The exemption will be for 6 months from the date of expiry of the current test certificate, assuming the new MOT is due after 30 March. So, if the restrictions are lifted on 30 September and an MOT is due on 29 September, the vehicle owner still has 6 months from 29 September to get it done.

Hope that makes sense.

The exemption will be for 6 months from the date of expiry of the current test certificate, assuming the new MOT is due after 30 March. So, if the restrictions are lifted on 30 September and an MOT is due on 29 September, the vehicle owner still has 6 months from 29 September to get it done.

However, the Government are saying that you still need to keep your car roadworthy.

The Department for Transport (DfT) is working with insurers and the police to make sure you are not unfairly penalised for not being able to get an MOT.

If you need an MOT, here is a list of garages that we use and are still open:
Base Garage, Great Bricett Tel: 01473 658987
Fast Test, Stowmarket Tel: 01449 770902
Fast Test, Claydon Tel: 01473 832680

If you can't remember when your MOT is due, here is the link to check: https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

Driving tests have also been suspended for up to 3months.
