Caroline’s Back-to-School Car Checklist & Term-Time Vehicles
It always catches us by surprise how quickly early September arrives! One minute we’re enjoying the summer, and the next, the roads around Ipswich, Stowmarket and Needham Market suddenly double in traffic as the school runs start back up and everyone returns to work.
With autumn weather usually knocking on the door at the exact same time, morning commutes can get a little hectic.
Before the chaos of the new term kicks off, I wanted to share a quick 5-minute safety checklist you can do on the drive at home, plus a peek at a few practical family cars we currently have on our pitch in Great Bricett!
4 Quick Autumn Car Checks Before Term Begins
1. Check Your Tyre Tread (Before the Rain Hits!)
Damp leaves and sudden September downpours make roads slippery very quickly. While 1.6mm is the legal minimum for tyre tread in the UK, Simon and I always recommend having at least 3mm for good grip when the autumn rain starts. Give your tyre pressures a quick check while they're cold, too.
2. Swap Squeaky Wipers & Top Up Washer Fluid
Low morning sun paired with dirty windscreen spray makes driving into the sun really tricky. If your wipers are streaking or making that awful squeaking noise, it’s time to swap them. Don't forget to top up your screenwash with a good seasonal mix to clear off road grime.
3. Check Headlights, Indicators & Battery Health
The mornings are getting noticeably darker now, so make sure all your bulbs, including brake lights and indicators, are working properly. Also, if your car has sat parked up for a couple of weeks over summer holidays, cold damp mornings can put an extra strain on older batteries.
4. Pack a Small "Just in Case" Kit for the Boot
With extra school run traffic, morning delays are bound to happen. Keep a little emergency stash in the boot: a high-vis jacket, a phone charger, a small torch, and an ice scraper for those unexpected chilly mornings!
Need Something a Bit More Practical for the School Run?
If your current car is feeling a bit cramped for sports kit and school bags, or if you're tired of worrying about its reliability, we’ve got some lovely, handpicked stock sitting on our forecourt in Great Bricett.
As many of you know, Simon and I don't buy cars from auctions. Every vehicle we sell is handpicked directly from its previous local owner, with a full service history and verified paperwork so you know exactly what you're buying.
A couple of highlights that are perfect for daily family duties right now:
-
Practical Family Crossovers: Something like our Mercedes GLC 220d SUV is fantastic for family life. It has a higher driving position for great visibility, ISOFIX child seat points, and brilliant boot space for everything the kids drag along.
-
Easy, Economical Automatics: If you want something smooth and easy for stop-start morning traffic, hatchbacks like our VW Polo TSI Automatic or BMW 1 Series are super economical, easy to park, and a total joy to drive.
