Keeping Your Car Cool (and Clean) During a Hosepipe Ban: A Suffolk Guide
Keeping Your Car Cool (and Clean) During a Hosepipe Ban: A Suffolk Guide
We don't normally get excited about water restrictions. This one's an exception - mainly because it turns out we've been doing it right for thirty years without even trying.
With Anglian Water's temporary hosepipe ban in force across Suffolk, a lot of local drivers are asking the same two questions: how do I keep my car clean without a hosepipe, and how do I keep it and myself cool in this heat without breaking any rules? Here's everything you need to know, Suffolk-specific and dealership-tested.
First, the bit everyone gets wrong: the business-use exemption
If you run a business that involves vehicles - a valeting service, a fleet, a dealership like ours - you might assume you're automatically exempt from the hosepipe ban. You're not, not in the way most people think. The exemption covers specific commercial uses, not blanket permission to hose down every car on the forecourt because it's "for work."
Here at Simon Shield Cars, every single car that comes onto our forecourt is washed by hand - bucket, sponge, and elbow grease. It was never a hosepipe-ban workaround. It's just how we've always done it, because a hand wash gets into the details that a hose and a rush never will. Turns out being old-fashioned occasionally makes you compliant.
How to hand-wash your car properly (no hosepipe required)
You don't need a hosepipe to get a genuinely good clean. You need the right method:
- Two-bucket method: one bucket of clean soapy water, one bucket of plain water for rinsing your sponge or mitt. Stops you dragging grit back over the paintwork.
- Work top to bottom: roof and windows first, wheels and lower panels last - the dirtiest parts stay dirtiest for a reason.
- A watering can or refillable spray bottle does the rinsing job a hosepipe would, just with a bit more patience.
- Waterless or rinseless wash products are worth having in the boot for a quick clean between proper washes - ideal for Suffolk's dustier country lanes.
- Don't forget the interior - heat makes dust and pollen stick to dashboards and seats far more than you'd think. A wipe-down does more for a car's feel than people expect.
It's slower than a hosepipe. It's also, if we're honest, a better wash.
Keeping your car cool in the Suffolk heat
The other side of a hot, dry spell is what it does to the car itself, not just the paintwork:
- Check tyre pressures more often. Hot tarmac and higher ambient temperatures increase pressure inside the tyre - check when cold.
- Open the windows if you're parked up, even briefly. Cabin temperatures climb fast in direct sun, and it protects trim, dashboards, and anything left inside.
- Use a windscreen shade or park in shade where you can - obvious, but genuinely one of the biggest differences for interior heat and long-term dashboard condition.
- Check your coolant level before any longer journeys. It's a two-minute job that prevents a very bad afternoon on the A14.
- Give the air conditioning a proper run, not just a blast on start-up - it needs to circulate to actually cool the cabin down. (See our social media posts about helping cool down cabins).
Why this matters if you're buying used
Every car on our forecourt has already had this level of care before you ever see it - hand-washed, checked over, and looked after the way we'd look after our own. Whether you're in Ipswich, Stowmarket, Needham Market, or out here with us in Great Bricett, that's the standard we hold every car to, hosepipe ban or not.
If you're heading out to test drive something in this heat, do the same for yourself as we do for the cars: bring water, check the aircon before you commit, and take your time. No rush, no hose required.
