New Law: Over 70s Drivers to face regular eye tests

🚗 New UK Law: Over-70s Drivers to Face Regular Eye Tests

Big changes are on the horizon for UK drivers aged 70 and over. As part of the government’s biggest road safety overhaul since 2006, new rules will require drivers in this age group to take a mandatory eye test every three years to keep their driving licence.

The aim is simple — to help keep everyone safer on the roads by ensuring vision standards are up to standard.

Here’s what we know so far:

  • Who it affects: All drivers aged 70 and above.

  • When: The changes are expected as part of a wider safety strategy in autumn 2025.

  • How: A vision test will be needed every three years to renew a licence.

  • Why: Poor eyesight is a factor in several road accidents each year, and regular checks should help prevent avoidable collisions.

The reforms will also bring in other safety measures, such as a lower drink-drive limit in England and Wales (matching Scotland’s stricter standard) and tougher penalties for drivers whose passengers don’t wear seatbelts.

👓 Our take: Whether you’re 17 or 97, clear vision is key to safe driving. Even if you’re not in the over-70 bracket yet, it’s a great reminder to get your eyes tested regularly.
